The SGOT/AST test measures the level of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), an enzyme found mainly in the liver, and also in the heart, muscles, kidneys, brain, and red blood cells. AST helps the body metabolize amino acids.

When cells in these organs—especially the liver—are damaged or inflamed, AST can leak into the bloodstream. Measuring AST levels helps healthcare providers assess liver health and detect or monitor liver injury and some other conditions.
