Also Known As:
Fecal elastase is a stool test used to assess pancreatic exocrine function. Elastase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas, and its level in stool reflects how well the pancreas is producing digestive enzymes.
Low fecal elastase levels indicate exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, which can be seen in conditions such as chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or pancreatic obstruction. Normal levels suggest adequate pancreatic enzyme production. The test is non-invasive and widely used to help diagnose and monitor pancreatic digestive disorders.
