Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin, normally produced by the C-cells of the thyroid. Under healthy conditions, its levels in the blood are very low. During systemic bacterial infections and sepsis, PCT levels rise significantly, making it a useful biomarker for identifying severe bacterial infections and guiding antibiotic therapy.
