The cortisol, serum test measures the level of cortisol in your blood. Cortisol is a hormone made by the adrenal glands that helps the body respond to stress, regulate blood sugar, control metabolism, reduce inflammation, and maintain blood pressure.

Because cortisol levels naturally change during the day (highest in the morning, lowest at night), the time of blood collection is important and is usually noted with the test result.
