The Ionized Calcium Test measures the free, biologically active form of calcium in the blood. Unlike total calcium, ionized calcium reflects the calcium that is readily available for essential body functions such as muscle contraction, nerve transmission, blood clotting, and bone metabolism. This test is used to assess parathyroid function, calcium imbalance, and certain kidney or critical care conditions.
